Identifying Rejectable Traits in SSB Candidates - A guide to understanding SSB Candiates
As military officers, we seek candidates whose strength lies in character, preparation, and resilience, not just confidence." - Col Rajvir Shama
There are a few prominent characteristics that are the main reasons for a candidate’s rejection. Even though these are not set in stone but if a person does any of the mentioned below there is a high chance the experienced selectors will also notice these.
Confidence is a Problem
- As a student when someone is a high achieving kid, they are into sports, score high marks, etc everyone around them always tells them that they are the perfect kid and would surely have no problem in clearing SSB.
- Due to this, they are overly confident.
- When a person lacks in certain areas and does not overcome their weakness but carries on thinking that they are capable of executing it, that is one of the biggest blunders one can do.
Preparation was Not Up to the Mark
- Many times aspirants think that because they know what they did wrong in the previous SSBs and that they have given it once and this thought process leads to the people not taking it seriously.
- There was an obvious lack of preparation from their side.
- This quality is something that takes a candidate to different paths. It can make them underconfident which is negative. It could also be a result of being overconfidence which is again a negative quality.
- If one is not prepared well then it does not improve you as a person. One thing we should remember is that even if we don’t get through the selection process, we should learn and expand our perspectives through the process of updating/gaining our own knowledge. Always remember “Knowledge” is power.
It depends on how focused and determined you are to achieve your dreams.
Lying has Not Helped Anyone
- AKA not telling the truth and exaggerating. Whenever a candidate has thought that they can get away with anything, that they can “lie smoothly and makeup stories no one will question them for” they tend to get rejected.
- It is something everyone should make sure they consciously stop themselves from doing.
- This is something that is discouraged as someone who is aspiring to be an army officer. It is not right to hide the truth and the experienced selectors of SSB will surely detect it.
Physical Standards and Robustness Need to be Maintained
- You cannot aspire to be an officer and want to serve the nation without thinking that you will face situations that will be very difficult in terms of the terrain you are in the land you are walking on, etc.
- A person who is willing to serve their nation should first make sure that they are in the condition to do so.
- Inadequate stamina leads to not being able to complete individual obstacles/ group obstacles/ progressive group tasks/half group tasks and command tasks, which are a part of the GTO tasks.
A Person Should be Mentally Robust
- The army is a tough job, you will face the best to the worst situation and for that, you need to be ready.
- You cannot give up in the middle of a fight and that is something that is checked during the interviews as well.
- Lack of Mental Robustness makes one weak in taking strong decisions/ risks/ quick decisions/capability to fight against the odds /Maintaining balance during an adverse situation. You will face different sorts of pressure as a defense officer and have to tackle them smoothly and calmly and for that one needs to be mentally robust.
Negative Thoughts (This Goes for Every Exam and Interview)
- If one does not believe in themselves how in the world will they ever clear any exam or interview? You need to start believing in yourself to be able to prepare with a mindset where you know you will clear any hurdle you come across.
- Weakens your moral/fighting spirit to succeed/successfully completing any task given to you. One thing you need to keep in mind is that with a lot of hard work you also need to believe in yourself.
Always remember that SSB is looking for candidates with an overall balanced personality with leadership qualities. Remember SSB is a selection center and not a rejection center.
But in order to get selected you need to be the best version of yourself, and then some more.
